Punctuation. We’re a little bit obsessed by it. Have a closer look at our business name, for example. Yes, it’s a clever play on the commonly used “Widgets, Inc.” name (we’re not a corporation, BTW) and yes, the punctuation is somewhat eccentric. We’ve argued among ourselves as to whether a comma would be preferable to a semi-colon between the two words, whether the second word should be capitalized; whether there should or should not be a space after that semi-colon. Would it be better if it were “Phrases, Inc.”? Is that fraudulent representation?
Imagine the debates about punctuation in which we indulge each time we really, really consider our business name. Sulking over comma placement, competing to define the usage of the colon versus the semi-colon, eyebrows and sometimes voices raised upon the mere mention of the em-dash.
Now, imagine that same passion applied to your manuscript, at every level down to the sentence—even the line break! We’re stewards of syntax, wizards of word choice, we plot and scheme over storylines and characters, we embrace concrete detail and swoon over sentence structure. We alliterate! We jest.
We seriously believe that good writing is good writing, no matter where or how it is used. We strive for the best possible versions of novels, non-fiction books, art catalogs, websites, essays, scholarly articles, frivolous ad copy, technical documentation—sheesh, what else?
The current project: yours, theirs, his or hers—that is the project we want to collaborate on, the writing that we want to bring as close as we possibly can to Good Writing. Incorporating quality phrases is our calling, our passion and our profession. Get in touch and let’s talk about how we can get worked up about your project, whatever it may be.
